How Do You Get to Kurashiki from Okayama and Tokyo?
This guide is for visitors who want to reach Kurashiki in Okayama Prefecture and get from the station to the old canal district. It covers the Shinkansen to Okayama, the local train, the highway, the nearest airport and the trip to the jeans town of Kojima.
We used the access page of the official Kurashiki tourism site, which is in Japanese, and the English pages of the same site. All pages were read on 2026-10-04. The times are the site's rough figures, so check a route planner for the day you travel.
By Shinkansen and local train
Kurashiki's own station has no Shinkansen stop. You ride the Shinkansen to Okayama Station and change to a local line. The site lists these Shinkansen times to Okayama on the Nozomi and Sakura trains:
- Tokyo: about 3 hours 20 minutes.
- Nagoya: about 1 hour 40 minutes.
- Shin-Osaka: about 50 minutes.
- Hiroshima: about 40 minutes.
- Hakata: about 1 hour 45 minutes. Kumamoto: about 2 hours 30 minutes. Kagoshima-Chuo: about 3 hours.
From Okayama to Kurashiki by local train takes 17 minutes. The site also lists a time of 8 minutes between Kurashiki and Shin-Kurashiki stations.
From Kurashiki Station to the Bikan area
The site says the Bikan Historical Area, the old canal district, is about 13 minutes on foot or about 5 minutes by bus from Kurashiki Station. Many visitors walk it. The site also lists the Kurashiki Ekimae Tourist Information Office, open from 09:00 to 18:00.
By car
Kurashiki Interchange on the Sanyo Expressway gives these rough times:
- To Okayama Interchange: about 10 minutes.
- To Fukuyama-Higashi Interchange: about 30 minutes.
- To Himeji-Higashi Interchange: about 1 hour 15 minutes.
- To Hiroshima Interchange: about 1 hour 30 minutes.
- To Chugoku-Suita Interchange near Osaka: about 2 hours 10 minutes.
The site notes that times change with traffic, and that Hayashima Interchange is another way in. Parking information for the Bikan area is on the tourism site.
By highway bus
The site lists Shimoden Bus and Ryobi Bus, among others, as the highway bus operators. It tells visitors to check each company's website for routes, fares and times.
By air
The nearest airport is Okayama Momotaro Airport. The site gives these times:
- Tokyo: about 1 hour 10 minutes. Sapporo: about 1 hour 45 minutes. Okinawa: about 2 hours 10 minutes.
- International direct flights are listed from Seoul, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Taipei.
- From the airport to the north exit of Kurashiki Station: about 35 minutes. To the west exit of Okayama Station: about 30 minutes.
The site says non-stop airport connection buses are convenient for reaching Okayama and Kurashiki stations.
The English page gives different figures
The English access page on the same site gives older or slightly different times. It lists Tokyo Haneda to Okayama Momotaro Airport at about 1 hour 20 minutes, and the Tokyo Shinkansen at about 3 hours 15 minutes. Where the two pages differ, we used the Japanese page first.
The English page also lists highway buses to Kurashiki Station. Kobe takes about 3 hours 30 minutes and Kyoto about 4 hours 15 minutes. Nagoya takes about 6 hours by day or 8 hours overnight. Tokyo takes about 10 hours overnight, and Fukuoka about 8 hours 30 minutes overnight. Buses from Matsuyama and Kochi stop at Washuzan Kita instead of the station, taking about 2 hours 40 minutes and 1 hour 50 minutes.
To Kojima
Kojima, the jeans town, is a separate area. From Okayama Station the Marine Liner on the Seto-Ohashi Line takes about 25 minutes. From Kurashiki to Kojima is about 16 km. By car it is about 30 minutes. The route bus to JR Kojima Station takes about 50 minutes.
Nearby areas by train
The English page gives these distances from Kurashiki Station. Mabi is about 10 km away: 7 minutes on the JR Hakubi Line to Kiyone Station, then 7 minutes on the Ibara Line to Kibinomakibi Station. Tamashima is about 9 km away: 8 minutes on the Sanyo Main Line to Shin-Kurashiki, then about a 20-minute drive. Chayamachi is about 6 km away, about 25 minutes by local bus.
